Exploring Rethymno, Greece: Part 2

July 2023

Continuing my journey through Rethymno, Greece was an unforgettable experience. Cats were aplenty and treated with the utmost respect, which may seem odd to some, but it added to the charm of this picturesque town. Along the way, I discovered more exciting places that made me fall even more in love with this mesmerizing destination. In this blog post, I will share my experiences in Rethymno, including a trip to the stunning island beach of Preveli and getting a new tattoo to honor my grandson and how can I forget the Greek food.

After my initial shock at seeing the number of feline inhabitants in Rethymno, I warmed up to them and even found myself taking care of some in the absence of my Airbnb host (that one time I lived with six cats for three weeks). Initially, I found it peculiar to witness the locals wholeheartedly embracing these feline creatures, be they street cats or cherished house cats, tending to their needs as if they possessed regal status. Gradually, their presence became a familiar sight, a warm reception awaiting me. Feast your eyes upon the countless felicitous felines, living their utmost best lives in the enchanting realm of Rethymno.

July 4th - I decided to take a break from Rethymno and visit Preveli Beach, a picturesque island beach that was nothing short of stunning. After finding the perfect spot under a tree to shelter from the sun, I took a dive into the cool water with some encouragement from fellow beach-goers. Submerging myself into the crystal-clear waters was pure bliss, providing the perfect solace from the bustling Rethymno City and its influx of tourists.

During my stay in Rethymno, I decided to get a tattoo to honor my new grandson, Shi'Darius. After weeks of contemplation, I finally settled on an idea, literally as I headed to the tattoo parlor. The tattoo artist was accommodating and patient as I described what I wanted, and soon I had a beautiful piece of artwork on my left wrist, crafted with the same love as the one commemorating Nova on my right.

Last but not least, I must mention the delicious Greek cuisine. Every meal was a unique blend of fresh salads, calamari, vegetables, freshly squeezed orange juice, wine, and traditional Raki drink served after meals, and most notably, NO PRESERVATIVES! It's just so good. So when heading to Greece, go for the views but stay for the food.

Whether it's the cat-filled streets, the stunning beaches, vibrant shopping options, the delectable food, or the friendly locals, there is something for everyone in Rethymno. It is a place where you can discover hidden gems at every turn and leave with unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.
